Quirky casual jewelry with slow fashion values

Bull bracelets by Kate Henri

Robyn Berg’s new line of jewelry combines exotic colors and textures, a vintage sensibility, and offers just the right amount of quirkiness. This eclectic and well-traveled designer focuses on creating pieces that are informed by place and culture, whether indigenous or simply her own upbringing, and she does it without succumbing to a fast fashion mentality.

Some of Berg’s pieces are made in NYC, some are sourced and strung in the Philippines, and some are produced in collaboration with individual artisans and cooperatives that she meets through her travels. With a goal to work with artisans from around the world creating contemporary products and supporting a traditional way of life, she understands the business challenges that overseas collaboration can bring, as well as the positive feeling that comes from taking the initiative to design with social good in mind.

“It’s a challenge to communicate quality control with someone in a hut in sub-Saharan Africa who speaks Ewe (my Ewe sucks),” said Berg, when I asked more about who makes her designs. “However, it is doable if I continue that work on my own timeline, in limited editions, and do it exclusively for Kate Henri.”

Derived from her grandparents’ names, the brand Kate Henri gives tribute to their own commitments to craft: Kate made beaded floral arrangements, and Henri made needlepoint rugs for her dollhouse as a child, two memories Berg shared with Fashion At Liberty.

Likewise, Berg wants her creations to last physically and not be something you wear for only one season. “I do not want to be a four-season-churn-it-out business of disposable fashion and crappy craftsmanship,” she told me. I could not agree more with her sentiment.

Though currently based in Brooklyn, New York, Berg has plans to relocate to New Mexico and open up her own store in the near future. In addition to jewelry, she’s also been working with cooperatives in Mexico to develop textiles. We featured one of her gradient throw pillows before here!

Every Kate Henri collection features an item where a percentage of its profits will go to a local charity/cause. This piece is currently the heart pendant, $40.
